Indiana Legal Sites

Indiana Lawyer - Cooper Legal Services Law Library - "The premier web source on Indiana law."

Indiana Law Journal - The Indiana Law Journal is published quarterly by students of the Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington, Indiana.

Indiana Courts

Indiana Supreme Court - the highest Court in Indiana.  This Court is the ultimate interpreter of disputed cases brought to appeal when constitutional issues or serious criminal penalties are involved.

Indiana Court of Appeals - hears most all cases appealed from lower courts (usually a trial court) except those specifically reserved for the Supreme Court.  This Court also reviews decisions of administrative agencies, including the Worker's Compensation Board, the Department of Workforce Development and the Utility Regulatory Commission.

Indiana Tax Court - hears any case that arises under the Indiana tax laws and that is an initial appeal of a final determination made by the Indiana Department of State Revenue or the Indiana Board of Tax Review. In addition, the Tax Court has jurisdiction over certain appeals from the Department of Local Government Finance. The Tax Court also hears appeals of inheritance tax determinations from the courts of probate jurisdiction (original tax appeals).

Indiana Trial Courts - usually is the first type of Court that will hear Civil or Criminal cases.  This page is trying to list all trial courts in Indiana (on a county-by-county basis).

Indiana City/Town Courts - usually hears cases involving city or town ordinances.  Keep in mind that many counties don't have a city or town court.  This page is trying to list all city/town courts in Indiana.

Emory Law - United States Substantive Law - This site is a good starting point if you need to look up a federal case, court rule, relgulation or something in the US Code.

U.S. House of Representatives Internet Law Library - Another good starting point for federal material.  Where you can find the laws written by our federal legislators in Congress...

Available CFR Titles on GPO Access - Here are the rules published in the Federal Register by the Executive departments and agencies of the Federal government. The CFR is divided into 50 titles which represent broad areas subject to Federal regulation. Each title is divided into chapters which usually bear the name of the issuing agency.

Federal Register - This is the official publication for Presidential Documents and Executive Orders, as well as Notices, Rules and Proposed Rules from Federal agencies and organizations.

FedWorld Information Network Home Page - This big boy is the online locator service for the huge inventory of information disseminated by the Federal Government. Don't get lost!

U.S. Probation Office - Southern Indiana - assists the Court in both probation and pretrial functions through investigating and supervising individuals charged with or convicted of Federal crimes.

Federal Courts

U.S. Supreme Court - the highest Court in the land.  Accepts very few cases.

7th Circuit Court of Appeal - For the most part, before the United States Supreme Court decides whether to take your case...your case must go before the United States Court of Appeals. The United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit has jurisdiction over Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana!

U.S. District Court of Northern Indiana - similar to a state trial Court, but handles cases involving federal questions or larger sums of money.  This Court serves the northern half of Indiana.

U.S. District Court of Southern District of Indiana - similar to a state trial Court, but handles cases involving federal questions or larger sums of money.  This Court serves the southern half of Indiana.  IMO, this site sets a good example for other courts as this site provides case information, Local Rules, the Attorney Handbook, Guide to Jury Service, and the 7th Circuit Standards for Professional Conduct.

U.S. Bankruptcy Court - Northern District - the Court that handles bankruptices for persons and companies in northern Indiana.

U.S. Bankruptcy Court - Southern District - the Court that handles bankruptices for persons and companies in southern Indiana.
